3 Steps Driving License Program

(Important Announcement)
(Please read prior to starting Step 1)

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) Driving License Office (DLO) is the only organization that's authorized to issue a Texas Learner's License (permit) and a Texas Provisional License (under 18 driving license).

Driving schools are authorized to offer in-person courses, on-line courses, in-car driving lessons, and PDS Road Test. Driving schools don't issue driving permits or driving license!

The DLO in the Dallas / Ft. Worth metroplex, including Waxahachie, have a large appointment backlog of approximately 2 to 4 months from the day you make the appointment to the day you actually pickup your permit.

  • Before you take the teen course, let's get ahead of this long appointment backlog.
  • Please schedule your appointment today to pickup your permit at DPS DLO.
  • Click this link https://public.txdpsscheduler.com ) to schedule your appointment at the DLO. Select the category, "First Time Driver License Holder / Permit". Select a date and location. You can schedule your appointment at any DLO in the state of Texas.

To obtain a Texas teen driving license, all teen must complete the program in this order:

All teenagers must first take a 32-hours teen course to obtain their permit. There are three 32-hours teen driver education courses in the drivers education program.
  1. In-person (classroom course with a instructor),
  2. On-line (self pace course without a instructor), and
  3. Parent Taught (On-line, self-pace course without a instructor).
The parent and student must register and choose the course that works best for them.
  • At Pioneer, the teens can either take the In-person course or the On-line course.
  • Pioneer don't offer the Parent Taught course.
